All aboard! The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad offers riders the experience of traveling 64 miles through the Rocky Mountains of New Mexico and Colorado. It crosses the borders of these two states 11 times as it chugs its way up and over the 10,015-foot high Cumbres Pass. The tracks were first laid in 1880.
You’ll learn about the history, legends and lore of this region and the railroad from special, volunteer docents who ride along with you. The views are beautiful, with wildflowers, canyons and wildlife as the train carries you along at 12 miles an hour. Feel free to move around the train by venturing into the gondola car or between cars, holding on to the railing as you go.
Ride in the Victorian elegance of the Parlor and Deluxe cars or choose the budget-friendly Coach car. Either way, a delicious lunch is included.
The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad has been featured in more than 20 documentaries, mini-series and films over the past five decades, including “Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade” and “A Million Ways to Die in the West.”
Fall is a gorgeous time of the year for this adventure. You’ll enjoy exploring areas where no automobile can go and come away with a better understanding of this terrific location and the history of the railroad.
Most of the trips last about eight hours, leaving at 10 a.m. Prices depend upon the car choice, either Coach ($132.50 per adult), Deluxe ($192.50 per adult) or Parlor ($242.50 per adult). Prices are $10 cheaper in the summer and children’s tickets are discounted. View schedules and prices here: https://cumbrestoltec.com/schedule/.
