RIO RANCHO ROCKS: DISCOVER THE GROWING CLIMBING SCENE IN PROXIMITY TO MARIPOSA

Posted on May 13, 2026

Since its Olympic debut, rock climbing has become an increasingly popular sport among teens and adults alike, and New Mexico is no exception. With two indoor climbing gyms in the Albuquerque area and multiple outdoor climbing destinations nearby, Mariposa residents in Rio Rancho have plenty of opportunities to get involved in the sport.

Stone Age Climbing Gym

For those looking to climb indoors, Albuquerque is home to two Stone Age Climbing Gym locations. These are the largest climbing gyms in New Mexico and offer a wide range of options beyond climbing, including yoga and fitness classes, climbing instruction, personal training, and day passes or memberships.

They also provide community-oriented programs such as youth camps, birthday parties, team-building activities, and guided climbing services, making them welcoming spaces for climbers of all ages and experience levels.

Locations: Stone Age Climbing Gym North, 6200 Alameda Blvd. NE; and
Stone Age Climbing Gym Midtown, 4130 Culter Ave. NE.

Outdoor Climbing

For climbers who prefer the outdoors, the areas east of Albuquerque provide a variety of climbing styles, including bouldering, sport climbing, and traditional climbing. Just east of Albuquerque is ranging from bouldering to sport and trad climbing. Below is a list of the major climbing areas with select routes and directions as listed on Mountain Project:

  • Sandia Mountains: The Sandia Mountains sit on the east side of Albuquerque and roughly an hour drive to the top from Albuquerque. Sandia Peak has an elevation of 10,678 feet and the mountain offers committing alpine adventure with long approaches and tall walls.
  • Sandia Foothills: Provides lower-elevation climbing and bouldering nestled in a high-desert of piñon-juniper forest full of boulders and cactus.
  • Palomas Peak: Technical limestone sport climbing at the north end of the Sandia Mountains above the town of Placitas. About a 40-minute drive from Albuquerque with a 35-minute hiking approach.
  • TV Station Bouldering: High quality, alpine, limestone bouldering at the top of the Sandias, just north of the Sandia Crest.
  • Sandia Foothills Bouldering: Granite bouldering in the foothills of the Sandia Mountains. This is the closest outdoor climbing you can find from the city of Albuquerque. Popular spots are U-MoundFat City, Indian SchoolManitoba/Montgomery Trailheadand Three Gun (Tres Pistolas).
  • Carnuel Crag: This small cluster of large granite boulders offers decent climbing close to Albuquerque, with a relatively easy approach. It’s a great alternative to the gym. The wall faces east, making it especially pleasant on summer evenings and sunny winter mornings.
  • Ranger Station: A short, south-facing limestone cliff located immediately south of the Sandia Ranger Station building in Tijeras. The wall has easy access, mellow routes, and is an ideal spot for new climbers or anyone looking for a relaxed day on the rock, kids included.
  • Little Beaver Town: A small granite wall that faces north and is hidden from view from a neighborhood behind trees in an arroyo.
  • Big Block: A limestone small sport and bouldering crag just outside of Albuquerque.
  • Tunnel Springs: An area near Placitas which featuring short, sustained climbs on moderate quality, sharp limestone.
